i have installed the actual ms silverlight, but your gadget keeps asking me for getting silverlight..
  • azido · 1 year ago
i might add i'm using vista ultimate 64bit..
in firefox, the plugin seems to work flawlessly (version 2.031005.0 of the plugin is installed and working)

no matter what i try (closing browser + sidebar before silverlight installation, having them both opened when installing, installing silverlight as an administrator) it seems your gadget does not recognize the installed version of silverlight and only displays the "get microsoft silverlight" picture..
  • Adam Kinney · 1 year ago
The issue is that Silverlight does not run in 64-bit mode right now, so you need to run the Sidebar in 32-bit mode to get any Silverlight-based gadget to work. More information here: http://adamkinney.com/blog/323/default.aspx

ah there we go - that makes sense.

    thanks for your reply..

    Thanks for the info Adam,
I seem to have the same problem, however I am running Windows7 beta so there is no physical sidebar.

Anyway I can get the gadgets to run in 32 bit mode as well?

EDIT: I'm an idiot, a little research and I found out Windows7 does still use the sidebar.exe.

It now run in 32 bit mode and I dont get the silverlight error anymore :) A new problem though, all the gadget says is "click the settings icon to the right to add your friends' gamer tags...but I dont have a settings button. Only the X and a move button. Any ideas?

    Doesn't like Windows 7. ^^
  • Adam Kinney · 1 year ago
Ooohh, good reason for me to spin up a Windows 7 instance then :)
  • R3ality66 · 11 months ago
I can confirm that it wont work on Windows 7, it just fails to show the settings tab to set the thing up and right click - settings just loads the silverlight config page

:( too bad it looks like a cool gadget

Thank you for this!! This is really helpful

i have tried this over and over installing silverlight and the xobx friend watch gadget and it will nto show the settings icon that looks like a small "wrench"

    please help.
    i am running
xbox friend watch 1.2.0 adam kinney
    silverlight 2.0.31005.0
it works fine on my other computer but not this one.
i have also reset the sidebar by renaming the settings.ini so it all reset to default. any help please kenny thisis by far the best gadget ever made
  • Adam Kinney · 11 months ago
    Thanks Mike :)

Since its working on the other computers, I'm wondering if the one its not working is 64-bit Vista. If it is you need to run the sidebar in 32-bit mode to get it to work.
  • Mike · 11 months ago
vista 32 bit here as well , sp1 , not sure what's goign on , i have a screen shot showing the version numbers and the missing options icon on the gadget here
    http://photoshare.shaw.ca/image/5/f/3/107730/fr...

just dont understand what its doing , is there a specific file the friends gamertags are stored in i can copy from other computer and pop in this one as i don need to add more just have the ones i have on the other compter.

i have copied the whole directory from other computer to this one thats not working , C:\Users\Extreme\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar
    but still no go:(
  • Mike · 11 months ago
if i choose properties on the sidebar icon or a shortcut to it and select compatibility mode , it is greyed out and i am not able to change this option , was just looking but i am on vista home premium 32bit sp1
  • Mike · 11 months ago
    Anyone have any ideas ?
  • Adam Kinney · 11 months ago
It sounds like there is a JavaScript error occuring when the gadget loads. I'll take a look and see if I can come up with any ideas.
  • Mike · 11 months ago
thank you so much appreciate it alot :)
  • tom · 11 months ago
    It doesn't like Windows 7 x64 either. a bad combination i guess.

I have the silverlight thing but it still doesnt work.. wen i enter the gamertags in it doesnt show?!
  • Lunacy182 · 10 months ago
Same here. The thing is, it has been working for a while. Then just a few days ago it stopped. I'm running vista 64bit with the 32bit sidebar. I click the wrench, add in the names and click ok and I get nothing. It's just blank.
  • Billy.G · 9 months ago
Same for me. Updated to the latest silverlight and it doesnt work any more. Does not work with Windows 7 either. I hope the development continues on this great gadget as nothing else compares to it
  • Billy.G · 9 months ago
Tis broken Adam you planning on fixing it for us? :0)
  • Adam Kinney · 9 months ago
Yep, asking around internally about running it on Windows 7 now. Will let you know how as soon as I know more.
  • Lunacy182 · 9 months ago
It seems to work fine with my copy of Windows 7.

  • Adam Kinney · 9 months ago
Hello, unfortunately I'm completely tapped because of the MIX09 conference, but I do plan to get back to this after MIX.
  • Albert · 9 months ago
How? I'm able to see the settings on mine, but after I type the gamertags in, nothing shows up.
  • Albert · 9 months ago

I have troubles with your app. I have Vista X64. At first there was a problem with silverlight. I got it installed but it keeps telling me that it needs silverlight. And now all i got is a black-ish bar with nothing in it.
I can add friend. But i don't see them appear.

    Please help!!
  • F. Tesselaar · 9 months ago
Sorry, i need to read the whole topic first....
  • Dave · 9 months ago
I have the same problem that others are having with the gamertags not showing up, when i type them in, I get nothing on the gadget.
  • Brian · 8 months ago
Great app. Just what I was looking for. Works great in Vista 32bit. But any chance we can add a scroll bar. I have 8 friends in the app and only shows the top 5 in the list. I can see and click on the very top edge of the 6th guy, but I really don't see him and the rest.
  • Itazura · 8 months ago
I'm having the same problem that most of the people are having. I'm running Vista Home Premium 32bit and the first time I installed this gadget it worked for a few minutes and then stopped. Now when I add my friend's tags I just get a black box with nothing in it. I've been reading and hoping to come across a solution to this problem but nothing yet. I was reading something else about a bug in the system dealing with the source code...is there some way of changing the source code to the new one or is that something that was just fixed by you guys?

I've been using this gadget ever since it released, but I've been having lots of problems with it over the last couple months. It started with the gamercards and current status not updating for very long periods of time. I'm talking days. I mean, it would say I'm currently online in Halo 3, when I haven't played it for several days. Well now, like others have said, the gadget doesn't work whatsoever. I type in the gamertags, and nothing shows except empty blackness. I've tried reinstalling the gadget with no luck at all. Its a shame, because this gadget was awesome when it worked.
  • Jason · 8 months ago
Are there any plans for a new version of the Sidebar gadget? The current one hardly ever works anymore. I am seeing the same issues as others. It says I am online when I'm not and doesn't seem to update for extremely long periods of time. Also when I click on someone the flyout usually will never display., just an empty box opens up.

I like the feel and look of your gadget over the other one called xbox live gadget. I wish you had a option to hide offline users and maybe add a scroll feature if we had more than 5 online users. Other than that good work on your gadget :)

Hi adam, for more than a week now. The sidebar gadget doesn't show me any friends. even tryed to restart the gadget and all, but it doesn't work.
  • Mike · 7 months ago
I've been having problems with this gadget for the longest time now. I did some searching and found this gadget which also uses Silverlight I believe and it actually works for me and lets me have more than 5 friends. Hope it helps you guys out.

  • Curt · 6 months ago
Any new info on your gadget working again.
  • Adam Kinney · 6 months ago
Yes, I'm working on a new version right now that I expect to have finished in July. This one is going to be much better than before, I'm really enjoying working on it.
  • Yay222 · 5 months ago
I am going to sound stupid but I cant install it! Im running 64 bit but a 32 bit sidebar. All it is doing when i download is opening the folder to view the files.
  • Cheekychappie · 5 months ago
    Hi there,

I have installed the latest version of silverlight which is now 3.0, and when I run your app it asks me to add the friends names, but then the app just shows a blank grey box, any suggestions?

    Thanks,
  • Adam Kinney · 5 months ago
Next week there will be a new version of the gadget released which will be much improved and support the latest build of Silverlight.
  • Drumstix42 · 5 months ago
sweet! I can't wait. I've been messing with the other XBL gadget that was posted somewhere on here. But it's a bit outdated itself, and is just plain html/css/javascript. I'd rather see this Silverlight one put to use.

If you could at least change one thing: make the settings so that the gamertag input box is 1 per line, rather than separated by commas. I think it's very easy for people to have their settings get a bit messed up with adding lots of friends =]

Also, a toggle to show/hide offline users would be phenomenal. Thanks!

is there any change of making a widget available for windows mobile?
